A Fridley man is facing charges for a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis last month that left a man dead.

Raquan Rahjai Johnson, 21, was charged Monday with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of drive-by shooting with a dangerous weapon.

Shortly after midnight on May 25, Minneapolis police officers responded to a shooting on the 4100 block of Columbus Avenue South on a report of a shooting; at the scene, police found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Two people at the scene said they were with the victim when a car they didn’t know drove past them and fired at them, according to the complaint.

Thirty-two discharged cartridge casings from six different guns were found on 41st and 42nd Street, the complaint stated. Surveillance video, as well as witness accounts, indicate an initial round of gunfire happened near 42nd Street before a second round on 41st Street, followed by a final round back on 42nd Street.

Court records say data from Johnson’s ankle monitor and cell phone show him at the crime scene during the shooting. Johnson admitted to being the shooter to investigators, the complaint says.

Johnson told authorities he was driving around with two friends when one of them got into a verbal argument with someone, who told them to come to the area of East 29th Street, adding he drove there knowing he was going to get into a gun fight.

The complaint goes on to say Johnson said his friends shot at three people in an alley, including the victim, before circling the block while continuing to fire guns.

The victim has not been identified by authorities.

Johnson is due in court Tuesday for a first appearance.
